How to apply for Foreign Degree Equivalency Certificates Online in Nepal ? UGC to oversee Equivalency
UGC to oversee Foreign Degree Equivalency
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will assume responsibility for determining the equivalency of academic degrees obtained from foreign universities and equivalent educational institutions. The UGS has announced that it will start accepting online applications for the equivalence from July 22, 2026 (Shrawan 2083), following a recent legal amendment.
The function had previously been carried out by Tribhuvan University's Curriculum Development Centre. In the past, in order for their degrees to be officially recognized, graduates from both domestic and foreign universities in Nepal had to get equivalency certificates through Tribhuvan University’s Curriculum Development Centre.
The Curriculum Development Centre said the authority was transferred to the UGC after Section 6 of the University Grants Commission Act, 2050 was amended through the Some Nepal Acts Amendment Act, 2082. As UGC is ready to manage international degree recognition, credit transfer, and quality assurance in higher education, TU's Curriculum Development Center will no longer be accepting new applications.
The amendment transfers all responsibilities related to the recognition and equivalency of higher education qualifications to the UGC from July 17 onward.
Make sure to adhere to the new procedure if you intend to use a foreign degree to apply for further studies, government/public sector job positions, or professional registration, in Nepal.
Foreign Degree Equivalency Portal
Foreign Degree Equivalence Portal has been developed, which is a dedicated online platform by the University Grants Commission to verify and grant equivalence for educational certificates earned from foreign universities - built to make the process faster, transparent, and fully digital.
The online application https://ugcequivalence.edu.np for equivalence of academic degrees obtained from foreign universities and equivalent institutions starts from 22 July 2026 onwards.
