TU unconcerned about students' troubles

Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE) at Tribhuvan University (TU) is yet to realize the troubles faced by students from the districts to collect their certificates from Kathmandu.

The TU has failed to provide services to the students seeking transcripts and other credentials of their academic qualification from its regional offices. About one million students sit for the examinations under the OCE every year.

Bhoj Kumari Neupane, who studied MA from Sapta Gandaki Multile Campus, Bharatpur said, “I came all the way from Chitwan to submit my thesis. It would have been better if there had been provision of submitting thesis to our own college. It was difficult for me to manage time and the trip was also expensive.” She further added, “I am yet to get the transcript of my Bachelor's Degree as I had no time to line up for about a week.”

Another student from a distant place from the capital says he faced similar problems in collecting transcript.

“It would have been easy if there was facility of providing transcripts from colleges in the same way they provide the mark-sheets,” said Shitendra Prasad Yadav, a MA graduated from Ram Swarup Ram Sagar Multiple Campus, Janakpur. “I submitted the form today and will have to come after 15 days to collect the transcript. It is expensive and difficult to manage time to come to Kathmandu all the way from Janakpur,” he added.

Lack of information is another problem created by the OCE frequently, complained scores of students. “Information process of the OCE is not good. Staff show irritating behavior while we ask them for information and they hesitate to cooperate with us,” complained Sajina KC, who studied BBS at Patan Multiple Campus.

“I need a duplicate of the mark-sheet of my brother, who is abroad for further studies. He needs it and the original mark-sheet itself is here. But the TU staff say they cannot provide it,” lamented, Bishesh Sharma Subedi, a fourth-year student of BALLB at Nepal Law Campus.

TU staff make mistakes such as spelling errors of student's name in the certificates but they don't work seriously to correct their mistakes themselves. “I had written Sijan while filling the form but they made it Srijan in my mark-sheet. I need to correct it urgently within three days. But the staff at OCE here are uncooperative.

Controller of the OCE Keshab Raj Bastola said, “Complaints of students are reasonable and we are working to address the problems. During the office meetings, I have instructed all of the 300 staff to cooperate with the service seekers and provide them information in a good manner.”

Bastola said that one of the major reasons behind delay in service was their outdated software and server. “We are working to update it to increase the efficiency and accuracy of work,” he added. “The project will be completed in about next six months.”

“We are eager to provide services from the regional offices but the lack of infrastructure and skilled human resources are causing hurdles,” Bastola added.
