TU professors, staff found playing truant

Tribhuvan University's central monitoring team has found that many professors were not present in the constituent campuses to teach students on regular days.

The team has been monitoring its constituent campuses, central departments, research centres and other offices for the last 45 days. During the monitoring, many of the professors were found absent during duty hours while some were found to have left the country without informing the management. Bishnu Aryal, chief, Office of the Vice-Chancellor and a member of central monitoring team, today said that they started monitoring staff attendance from August-end as per the directives from Vice Chancellor Hira Maharjan.

The monitoring team comprising chief of Employees Administration Division, chief of Inspection Division and others monitored attendance of teaching and non-teaching staff in constituent campuses, research centres and central departments of various subjects within the Valley before Dashain. Similarly, it recently carried out monitoring of institutions outside the Valley after Dashain. The team has also investigated attendance of staff and professors at Pokhara based-Prithvi Narayan Campus, Western Engineering Campus, Institute of Medicine Pokhara, Institute of Forestry and Dharan based-Purbanchal Engineering Campus.

“Though attendance seems to be a minor issue, we had to monitor it after receiving complaints of absence of staff and professors from students and other concerned,” Aryal said.

He stated that many staff were found negligent towards their work. “During monitoring, we found that some professors intimidated the staff of colleges to mark them present for whole month,” he added.

TU has 7,966 teaching faculty and 7,230 non-teaching staff including support staff in its 60 constituent campuses. In current academic session, altogether 405,341 students have enrolled at various levels of TU academic programmes. As many as 148,141 (36.55 per cent) students study in its 60 constituent campuses including 38 central departments, while 257,200 (63.45 per cent) students study in 1,053 affiliated colleges.
