Temporary Teachers’ Central Struggle Committee has threatened to go on a nationwide strike if their demands are not fulfilled at the earliest.

Organising a press meet in the capital today, it said the Teachers’ Service Commission’s decision to publish results of the recently held examinations for the appointment of permanent teachers through open competition will displace school teachers who have been working on temporary basis since 2007.

The temporary and contract teachers further warned of ‘serious consequences’ if they were discriminated against by the government and were not granted permanent status. Ram Chandra Adhikari, president of the committee, said the temporary teachers will be left with no option but to launch a nationwide education strike if the government turns down their genuine demands.

The teachers have demanded that the government make an amendment to the existing laws and rules on education policy and manage the temporary teachers without further delay. They are organising a sit-in in front of Singha Durbar on May 4 and May 5 to press the government to address their demands. TSC is doing groundwork to publish the results of 13,000 teachers of various subjects for secondary level in different districts. The government in the past had agreed to hold an internal competition for temporary teachers and those who were appointed before 2007.

Around 55,000 teachers are working on temporary basis and under relief quotas across the country.
