Kathmandu: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has directed the authorities concerned to take the initiative for establishing the Open University.

During a meeting with Finance Minister Barshaman Pun, Finance Secretary Krishnahari Baskota and Education Secretary Shanker Pandey on Wednesday, the Prime Minister stressed the need of cooperation between the finance ministry and education ministry to build physical infrastructures for the establishment of the Open University.

The meeting focused on how to move ahead regarding the establishment of the Open University in context of the Higher Education Act related to the Open University remaining under consideration in the Parliament, said education secretary Pandey.

Though the meeting discussed on tabling the Act at the Council of Ministers, no concrete decision to this effect was made, said Pandey.

The government with the joint venture with the Non Resident Nepalis’ Association has decided to establish an Open University in the country.
