Largest number graded C; 481,986 eligible for higher education

The largest number of students have been graded C in the just released results of the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations, and 481,986 out of the total are eligible for higher education.

The results of the examinations held in March-April were published on Thursday. For the first time in the history of the SLC exams, the results this year have been graded as per the letter grading system.

A total of 615,553 students including 159,417 from the exempted group had registered for the SLC this year, according to the Office of Controller of Examinations (OCE). Among these, 289,709 were males while 325,844 were female.

A total of 481,986 students obtained grade C and above, said Krishna Prasad Kapri, controller at OCE. “No student has been ranked under failed category this time but not all the students are eligible for admission anywhere they wish,” he added.

According to OCE, 16,454 students from the regular group and 4 from exempted group have been ranked under A+ while 41,577 and 8 students respectively have obtained grade A from the regular and exempted groups. Similarly, 48,611 students from regular group and 94 from exempted have received B+ while 68,181 from regular and 2,943 from exempted obtained B. Likewise, 94,716 students from regular and 29,780 from exempted have been ranked C+ while 104,278 students from regular and 75,340 from exempted received  grade C.

A total of 56,763 students from the regular group and 37,939 from exempted have been graded D+, which is termed insufficient, making them only partially acceptable, while 8,000 students from regular and 2,452 from exempted have been graded D. Eleven students from the regular group and two from exempted have been graded E, which means very insufficient.

Among the total registered students, 437,326 students from the regular group and 150,826 from exempted appeared in the exams this year, said OCE officials. Forty-three students were found underage and three were expelled from the exams.  The theory exams of 2,814 students were found missing as were the practicals of 2,752. Similarly, the exam copies of 383 students were cancelled while 15,553 students dropped out of the exams.

Meanwhile, the OCE officials said that the exempted exams will not be conducted from now onward.

SLC with 1.6 GPA eligible for Grade 11: HSEB
All the students who appeared in the first letter graded SLC exams will not be deprived of further studies, according to the last night decision of the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB).

"The students who want to study Science groups must have achieved minimum 2 GPA (Grade Point Average)," said Narayan Koirala, member secretary at the HSEB.

"A student who has scored at least 1.6 GPA can get admission in any other stream," he added.  "However, he/she should secure C+ in Science and Math, C in English, and D in other subjects for further studies in Science stream, while he/she should obtain C in major subjects and D in other subjects for continuing studies in other streams.

Anyone who gets minimum 1.6 GPA with D+ in major subjects will be eligible for studying law, arts, culture, music and different dialects." Dr Ram Hari Lamichhane, member-secretary of the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), said that any of the SLC appearing students would be eligible for skill-oriented programs at CTEVT.

"However, for pursuing some of the diplomas including science, engineering and health, a student needs to have secured at least 2.0 GPA or C grade along with specifications. We are not strict on this matter," he added.
