Halt recruitment of civil servants for two months, Govt tells PSC

The government has directed the officials of Public Service Commission (PSC) not to open vacancy to recruit fresh civil servants for the next two months. A Cabinet meeting took the decision to this effect on Sunday.

The government decided to direct PSC to wait for two months after the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration (MOFAGA) has sought two months’ time to finalise the details of necessary human resources required to run the local, provincial, and federal governments.

After a seven-hour long cabinet meeting, Energy Minister Barshaman Pun said the meeting decided to direct the PSC not to open vacancy for the recruitments till mid-December.

Chairman of PSC Umesh Mainali said the commission can manage the vacancies if the government makes such request.  But the officials are cynical that the government will complete the tasks within its own time frame, he said.

“I don’t think government would complete its tasks within next two months,” said Mainali. He added that many civil servants would retire if they were not promoted on time. “Such civil servants would go home and keep scolding the government for their entire life,” he said, adding that the government should not victimise them.

According to officials, the PSC had not stopped its regular activities of facilitating recruitment process of civil servants even during the worst times including the April 2015 earthquake.

The cabinet also decided to form a Directive Committee led by Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokhrel to prepare a projection of educated human resources necessary for the next 25 years after studying the existing situation.

Similarly, the cabinet has also decided to direct the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to manage necessary laws and develop other necessary infrastructure for effective management of Janakpur-Jayanagar-Kurtha railway which is being constructed at Nepal’s own management.

Government has also decided to shift the National Library, currently located at Pulchowk, on the premises of Jana Prashashan Campus of Jamal where a new building would be constructed to develop a world-class modern library equipped with all necessary technology.

The National Library was not functional after the building was damaged by the April 2015 earthquake.

According to a minister, almost 50 agendas were discussed and most of them were endorsed during the Cabinet meeting that lasted for nearly seven hours.
