A majority of candidates selected for temporary police have passed Grade X. However, there are even such candidates who are university graduates.

Record at temporary police training centre in Kirtipur shows that around 98 per cent of the selected candidates are high school graduates, while some of them have even completed post-graduation.

The academic qualification required to apply for the post of temporary police was basic literacy — the ability to read and write.

More than 20 temporary cops out of 264 at Kirtipur training centre have a master’s degree. The total number of applicants applying for the post had exceeded 200,000 out of which 98,168 were selected. Each of them will be paid Rs 51,000 for a period of two months.


Additional Inspector General and in-charge at Department of Human Resource Development of Nepal Police Madhav Joshi said, “Education qualification of applicants is almost the same throughout the country.”

Most of the selected candidates said they would not have applied for the job of temporary police if they had a better opportunity. Some of the candidates said they applied for temporary police to earn some money, which would help them prepare for Public Service Commission exams and attend foreign language classes.

Bishnu Prasad Upadhya, 25, from Dailekh, holds a master’s degree in public administration and Shila Adhikari, 30, from Dang, holds a master’s degree in rural development. For them it is an opportunity to earn some quick buck to prepare for competitive exams later.

Renuka Tamang, 22, from Nuwakot, who hold bachelor’s degree in English, said, “I want to join police force in future and for me this is an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in this field.”
