Curriculum Development Centre has prepared the draft of new curriculum for early childhood level to Grade XII.

The CDC has prepared the curriculum for early childhood education for the first time. As per the draft, classes have to be run on the basis of credit hour system.

The new curriculum proposed by CDC emphasises skill-based education. As per the new curriculum, in the foundation level, students soft skills will be developed and in the secondary level emphasis will on developing hard skills.

Local levels are given authority to conduct examinations up to Grade VIII and they are also given authority to develop syllabus for local languages.

Similarly, Grade X examinations will be conducted at provincial level and Grade XII examinations will be conducted at the national level.


The proposed new curriculum also envisions three types of education for Grade IX to XII — General, Sanskrit or Traditional, and Technical and Professional.

According to executive director of Curriculum Development Centre Krishna Prasad Kapri, general education will have streams like social sciences, science and management. Sanskrit or Traditional education will have Gurukul, Gonpa, Madrasa and Mundun courses and Technical and Professional education will be job oriented and will focus on developing hard skills.

Earlier, CDC has collected suggestions from educationalists and other stakeholders regarding the change in curriculum. According to executive director of Curriculum Development Centre Krishna Prasad Kapri, majority of stakeholders have suggested making Nepali language a compulsory subject in Grade XI and XII.

The draft will be finalized by the board, which includes members of National Curriculum Development Board and the Evaluation Council chaired by the Minister for Education.
