CBSE-affiliated schools being run without registration

The Cabinet today decided to send the report prepared by the education ministry on regulating schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education, India, to its Social Committee for study.Education Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel announced the decision today.

According to the education ministry, the report basically addresses three issues conditions for registering schools running CBSE curriculum in Nepal, deadline for school registration and academic certificate verification.

As per the Education Regulation, any school established in the country either by an individual, organisation or the government should be registered with the respective District Education Office.

However, this is not the first time that the education ministry has prepared a report with recommendations on regulating CBSE-affiliated schools.

Earlier, a committee was formed under the coordination of Education Secretary Bishwo Prakash Pandit to conduct a study on CBSE-affiliated schools.

The committee had recommended seeking deposits from such schools and giving them a month-long deadline for registration.

In April 2013, though the education ministry had asked the schools not to admit students in the new academic session, none followed the decision.

Meanwhile, student unions affiliated to various political parties, especially Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN Maoist, have been targeting such schools accusing them of teaching curriculum ‘which was against the national sovereignty and dignity.’

As many as 14 schools, including Kendriya Vidyalaya inside the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, have been running CBSE curriculum since many years without registration.

Other schools running CBSE curriculum in Kathmandu Valley are Chobar-based Modern Indian School, Tahachal-based Rupy’s International School, Bansbari-based The Chandbagh School, Gyaneshwor-based Rai School, Naxal-based Alok Vidhyashram, Dhobighat-based DAV Sushil Kedia Vishwa Bharti Higher Secondary School.

Similarly, other schools running CBSE curriculum outside the Valley, include DAV Rukmini Banarsi Kedia School in Birgunj, Delhi Public School based in Dharan, Birgunj and Biratnagar, Damodar Academy in Mahottari, Nepal Bhart Maitri Vidyalaya in Pokhara and Dedraj Sewali Devi Todi School in Biratnagar.
