Course Description:

The Bachelor’s in Development Studies (BDevS) from Kathmandu University is a four-year, interdisciplinary program that emphasizes sustainable development in both theory and practice. It introduces learners to a broad yet integrated set of disciplines- including Economics, Sociology, Environmental Studies, Development Management, and Research Methods—so that they can analyze development challenges from multiple perspectives and design context-appropriate solutions.

The curriculum builds foundational analytical skills while encouraging critical inquiry into how governance, policy, markets, civil society, and ecological systems interact to shape development outcomes. Students explore issues such as poverty and inequality, livelihoods and social protection, gender and inclusion, climate resilience, urbanization, migration, and the political economy of reform. They learn to evaluate development programs and public policies, interpret data with methodological rigor, and translate evidence into practical recommendations for communities and institutions.

A strong emphasis is placed on sustainability and ethics, helping students understand trade-offs in development decisions and the long-term implications for people and the planet. Coursework is complemented by applied learning through case studies, project work, and field engagement where possible, enabling students to connect classroom concepts with real-world challenges. Graduates are prepared for roles in NGOs, government agencies, social enterprises, research organizations, and international development partners, or to pursue advanced study in development-related fields.
