Kathmandu: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has decided to make entrance examination mandatory for students who want to study medicine at a foreign university. The council says the quality of the doctors who studied abroad is very poor in comparison to the doctors passing out of medical colleges in Nepal.

Hundreds of students who are unable to pass the entrance exam conducted by NMC are studying MBBS in foreign universities.

Students who get even 50 percent marks in +2 get admission abroad to study medicine and due to the practical marks in science stream, most students score over 50 percent.

According to the council, every year more than 500 students go abroad to pursue medical education. Among them, 60 percent go to Bangladesh while rest go to China and other countries. The council says 70 percent students who studied in Chinese universities cannot pass licensing test of the council.

The doctors have to pass licensing test of the council to get permission to work in Nepal. Out of those who studied medicine in Bangladesh, at least thirty percent failed to pass the licensing test of the council. The students who have studied medicine in foreign universities have repeatedly failure in the licensing test of the council.

“To ensure the quality of the doctors, we have decided to make the entrance test compulsory for the students who wants to go abroad to study MBBS,” NMC Registrar Dr Nilamani Upadhya said. “Some students who got MBBS degree from foreign universities even do not have basic knowledge of medicine,” he added.

He doubts the certificates produced by some of the students who studied medicine in foreign universities may be fake. Many of these students have given up the career in medicine after being unable to pass the council examination in several attempts.

“The Ministry of Education has also given consent to the council for screening the students who want to pursue MBBS degree from foreign universities.
