The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday ordered the government to present progress report on providing perks and facilities to 33 thousand accountants and peons who have been working at government schools across the country as civil servants.

A single bench of Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi issued the order in response to a writ petition filed against the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Earlier, a division bench of Justices Balram KC and Awadhesh Kumar Yadav on February 6, 2011 had directed the MoE to address the demands of concerned accountants and peons within six months by formulating necessary act.

A writ petition was filed on Tuesday against the government arguing that the minister for education was guilty of contempt of court by not implementing the apex court´s earlier verdict.

The petitioner claimed that 33 thousand accountants and peons who have been working at government schools across the country don´t get perks and facilities as civil servants.

The MoE had formed a committee to make recommendation for resolving the issue. However, the government did not do any thing regarding the issue.

The writ petitioner has also claimed that the MoE even did not inform the Ministry of Finance about details of serving accountants and peons working at government schools across the country.
