Govt to implement new Grade 11 curriculum from this year

Nov. 2: The Ministry for Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) has appealed to all stakeholders to adopt new curriculum of Grade XI from this academic year.

At a time when the private school operators are reluctant to accept the new sets of curriculum for Grades XI from this year, the government has directed all stakeholders to introduce the new curriculum.

The Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) of the MOEST introduced the new curriculum in school level from Grade I to XII after the new education act restructured school education with Grade I to VIII categorising as basic education and Grade IX to XII as secondary education.

Deepak Sharma, spokesperson of the MOEST, said, “Let there be no confusion, the new curriculum for Grade XI will come into effect from this year.”

He also asked local governments, guardians and students to keep an eye on implementation of new curriculum at their specified area at a time when many private schools are refusing to implement it from this year.

The new structure of the school level education has formally ended the stream-based education like Science, Management, Humanities, Law and Education and made English, Nepali and Social Study compulsory in Grade XI and Life Skill, English and Nepali in Grade XII.

This new curriculum will enable the students to choose the subjects from different categories of elective subjects.

There are three compulsory subjects and three optional subjects in both grades and the students can choose physics and sociology together.

The CDC has categorised optional subjects in four groups and the students have to choose one subject each from the three groups.

The students can also choose one extra subject in both grades which is not mandatory.

However, the operators of the private schools said it would be wrong to enforce the new curriculum at this time of crisis. Yubraj Sharma, senior vice-chair of the Higher Institutions and Secondary Schools’ Association (HISSAN), an association of the private schools providing Grade XI and XII education, said they were against the government decision because this was time to reduce the load of the students.

School operators are also enrolling students according to old structure with a demand to halt the plan for this year and implement it next year after holding discussions with the stakeholders.

But, the government has stated time and again that the new curriculum would come into effect in Grade XI from this year and examinations would be held accordingly. The full-fledged class of Grade XII is expected to go ahead from this month.
