26,000 SEE students won't be able to join Grade XI

Sep 1: This year more than 26,000 students, who passed the School Education Examination (SEE), will not be allowed to enrol in grade 11 because of a new provision introduced by the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC).

Out of 472,078 students, who received their SEE grade sheet this year, more than 26,000 students are disqualified to get admission in 11 due to the new provision introduced by CDC, teachers’ federation stated.

The CDC recently introduced a provision, according to which a student must secure at least D+ grade in Maths, Science and English and 1.6 GPA in aggregate in grade 10 to be eligible to enrol in grade 11. The new decision of the CDC has made the academic future of many students uncertain, as the National Examination Board (NEB) decided not to conduct upgrade examination of SEE this year.

Although it was not mandatory to secure D+ in mathematics to get enrolment in humanities and education faculties till last year, now the students who have failed to secure at least D+ in major subjects cannot qualify to study grade 11 from this year.

Head teachers of the schools, from where majority students failed to secure D + grade, are now worrying about their students’ future. Some of them are even facing mental and physical torture from the students and their guardians as the schools themselves had sent the evaluation grades of their students.

From Dhulabari Secondary School, Jhapa, 101 of 240 students of grade 10 are disqualified for higher education. Mahendra Luitel, headmaster of the school, said they had evaluated the students genuinely, but now they are suffering from the revised provision of the CDC.

Many other schools of the district have been facing a similar problem, he added.

Likewise, 32 of 44 students of Kusheshowr Secondary School, Ramechhap, are disqualified to get enrolment in grade 11, Bal Dev Dhami, headmaster of the school, informed.

Regarding the problem of the students, Ganesh Prasad Bhattarai, spokesperson of the CDC, said they had not thought that a huge number of students would be disqualified to enrol in grade 11 because of the new provision.

Now the CDC has submitted a new provision of enrolment at the Ministry for Education, Science and Technology for the approval after getting complaints from stakeholders.

However, Bhattarai blamed the teachers for the poor performance of their students. He urged the teachers to change their teaching techniques to improve the performance of their students.

He, further, said those students obtaining lower grades can enrol for technical education. But, headmaster Luintel said technical education could not be feasible for all students because of their financial condition.
