Scholarships & Financial Aid in Kathmandu University

The University offers variety of full and partial Scholarships for the deserving and meritorious students.I The university's policy is to encourage all sectors to make contributions to the scholarship fund, which will be used to support academically deserving but financially disadvantaged students.

Kathmandu University, established in 1992 through private initiatives,  is an autonomous, not-for-profit, non - government institution dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence. It is the third oldest university in Nepal, located in Dhulikhel of Kavrepalanchok District, about 30 km (19 mi) east of Kathmandu Currently, the University's School of Science, School of Management, School of Engineering, School of Medical Sciences, School of Education, School of Law, and School of Arts offer a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs in science, engineering, medicine, management, arts, pharmacy, environment, music, law, human & natural resources, information technology, and biotechnology. The academic programs of the University are based on credit-semester system with continuous internal evaluations

In order to encourage and promote high-quality education for leadership, Kathmandu University (KU) has been awarding a variety of scholarships to a number of its deserving and meritorious students. Numerous financial support programs in KU have contributed to the preservation of high academic standards. The university's policy is to encourage all sectors to make contributions to the scholarship fund, which will be used to support academically deserving but financially disadvantaged students.

KU currently runs the following school-specific scholarship programs.   
I)  Scholarships in KU SOS  (for students in KU School of Science Programs)
II) Scholarships in KU SOE  (for students in KU School of Engineering Programs)
III) Scholarships in KU SOM (for students in KU School of Management Programs)
IV) Scholarships in KU SOED (for students in KU School of Education Programs)
V) Scholarships in KU SOA (for students in KU School of Arts Programs)
VI) Scholarships in KU SOMS (for students in KU School of Medical Sciences Programs)
VII) Scholarships in KU School of Law (for students in KU School of Law Programs)

A. Scholarship Scheme in KU School of Science ( KU SOS ) programs:
(For deserving and meritious students through fair selection)

1. KU SOS Need Based Scholarship (Applicable to 1st year students) :
The need based scholarship is generally announced during the time of admission each year and is focused to 1st year needy students admitted in KU UNG programs. For each 30 fee paying students, a student will be admitted on partial scholarship (equivalent to the tuition fee of one student). This scholarship is provided to 1st year students at the time of admission, first time on need basis and then based on their academic performance reviewing annually.

2. Merit Based Scholarship:
Merit based scholarship is provided to the following category students:
- Entrance topper only for UNG 1st year 1st semester
- Topper of each semester
The merit based scholarship is provided to the topper of the semester per 30 students' intake capacity.

3. KU Loan Scholarship:
Loan Scholarship is generally provided to students anytime as per their need. Under this category, a loan is provided to the selected students enabling them to meet 25% to 50% of total fees charged by the University. In this scholarship, the student must sign a contract paper with the University (as a bond paper) in the presence of their parents for its refund. The number of this scholarship offered in this scheme depends upon the available scholarship fund which in turn is dependent on the return/payment of the load received by the students in earlier years.

4. Ram Man Shrestha Memorial Fund (For Marginalized Female Mathematics Candidates)

5. UGC Formula Funding Graduate Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by University Grants Commission Nepal under their terms and conditions and provided to the graduate level students.

6. KU Silver Jubilee Graduate Assistantship :
In this scholarship, graduate level students are involved in departmental labs assisting undergraduate students during the lab hours. This scholarship is provided to the deserving candidates as per the need of the department and request of the candidate to the department. Their tuition fee is deducted depending on their working hour and the progress report submitted to the Office of the Dean through the recommendation of HoD.

7. KU Silver Jubilee Teaching Assistantship to Post-graduate students (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) :
Graduate Assistantship is provided to M.Phil. and Ph.D. students as per the need of department and request of the candidate. The tuition fee is reimbursed after the successful course completion and report submission to Office of the Dean through the recommendation of HoD.

B Scholarships in KU School of Engineering programs:
1. Scholarship for UNG students:
KU SOE Scholarship:
It is focused for meritorious and needy (economically weak) students successfully admitted in KU UNG programs. For each 30 fee paying students, ONE student will be admitted on full or partial scholarship(equivalent to the fee of one student).This scholarship is provided to 1st year students at the time of admission, first time on need basis and then based on their academic performance, after reviewing each year. They need to maintain a minimum total GPA of 3.0 to continue in each academic year. Also, it will not be regular for students who have to appear compartmental exams and who does not maintain discipline.

KU Educational Loan:
Under this category, an educational loan will be provided to the selected students enabling them to meet 25% to 50% of total fees charged by the university. This educational loan depends on available fund in each UNG program of SOE as per KU rule. It is required that the student must sign a contract paper with the university (as a bond paper) for its refund. Other conditions are same as that in KU scholarship. The number of this educational load offered in this scheme depends upon the available loan scholarship fund which in turn is dependent on the return/payment of the loan received by students in earlier years.

ii) KU Graduate Assistantship:
This assistantship is focused for M. Tech./M.S. by research, M. Phil. and Ph.D. students of SoE based on their academic performance or exposited. In this category, student is provided teaching assistantship to cover partial or full tuition fee.

iii) Other Scholarships for Engineering Students:for Geomatics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering(Power)

C. Scholarships in KU School of Management:
1. KU SOM Scholarship:
- This scholarship is provided to one MBA student. It is available at the time of admission upon submission of the Financial Aid Form supported by necessary documents. The School's Admission and Examination Committee, after examining the documents and interviewing the applicants decides to award the scholarship on need basis.

The student receiving this scholarship must maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.3 in the subsequent terms to qualify for its continuation. This scholarship involves full or partial waiver in tuition and other fees.

2. Juddha Bahadur Scholarship:
This scholarship is paid out of the interest earned from the fund donated by Mr Juddha Bahadur Shrestha. One or more students receive this scholarship that involves full or partial waiver of tuition and other fees depending on the availability of money every year.

The proceeding that is followed is same as in case of KU Scholarship.

D. Scholarships in KU School of Education programs:
1. KU Graduate Assistantship:
This is provided to M.Ed., M.Phil and Ph.D. students in SOED based on their academic performance or expertise. In case, teaching assistantship is provided to selected student.

2. M.Ed. Scholarship: For M.Ed. students in rolled in Environmental Education and sustainable Development program. It is project based scholarship.

E. Scholarships in KU School of Arts programs:
Scholarship for UNG students:
KU SOA Scholarship:
It is focused for meritorious and needy (economically weak) students successfully admitted in KU UNG programs. For each 24 fee paying students, student will be admitted on full or partial scholarship(equivalent to the fee of one student).This scholarship is provided to 1st year students at the time of admission, first time on need basis and then based on their academic performance reviewing annually. They need to maintain a minimum total GPA of 3.0 to continue in each academic year. Also, it will not be regular for students who have to appear compartmental exams and who does not maintain discipline.
