Course Description:

Program Objective

 

The MBA program is directed at preparing professional managers for the business and non-business sectors. The program focuses on developing managerial and entrepreneurial capabilities of students through the curricular and co-curricular activities. The MBA program specifically aims to:

  1. Prepare professional managers for the business and non-business sectors.
  2. Develop entrepreneurs capable of evaluating risks and taking challenges in the emerging global business environment.
  3. Inculcate knowledge, skill, and attitude in students so that they become scientifically approached, result oriented and socially responsive professionals.

 

Teaching Pedagogy

The MBA program is based on the student-centered learning approach. The general teaching methodology of the program includes interactive lectures, case studies, group discussions, seminars and class presentations. The teaching faculty shall determine the appropriate teaching learning methods suitable to the course.

 

Attendance

The MBA program is an intensive professional program. This program demands a very high level of commitment from students. Students are required to attend regularly all classes, seminars and presentations as required by the course. Students failing to attend 80 percent of classes in regular MBA program and 75 percent of classes in extended mode MBA program shall not be allowed to appear in the semester-end examination.

 

Examination and Evaluation

The performance of students will be evaluated through ongoing in-semester evaluation and semester-end examination.

 

a. In-semester Evaluations

The in-semester (internal) evaluation shall have a total weight of 40 percent. The concerned faculty shall be responsible for the continuous in-semester evaluation. The in-semester evaluation shall be based on a student's performance in presentation, case analysis, individual and group assignments, class tests and others as required by the course. A student must secure a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or Grade C in a course in order to be eligible to appear in the semester-end examination of that course.

 

b. Semester-end Examination

The semester-end examination shall have a total weight of 60 percent. The Office of the Examination Management of Purbanchal University will normally conduct the semester-end examination. The semester-end examination shall be based on problem solving questions, analytical questions and case studies or any other formats as demanded by a course.

Admission Criteria

The minimum criteria for eligibility for admission into the MBA Program are:

  • Successfully completed a three-year Bachelor's Degree from any university recognized by the Purbanchal University.
  • Secured at least 45% in aggregate in bachelor or equivalent examination.

 

Syllabus

Curricular Structure

The MBA program has a total weight of 69 credit hours. The program comprises of four distinct components:

a.

Foundation Courses 12 Credit

b.

Core Courses 33 Credit

c.

Specialization Courses 12 Credit

d.

Capstone Courses 6 Credits

e.

Internship / Thesis 6 Credits

Based on the applicant's performance in the group interview the school will organize personal interview to measure the applicant's aptitude and commitment to pursue the MBA degree.

 

 

Course Objectives:

 

Organizational Management
This is a foundation course that aims to develop students' understanding and appreciation of the basic concepts and processes of organizational management.

 

Managerial Communications
This is a foundation course that aims to develop student's skill in using written and oral communication in interactive and organizational environment.

 

Quantitative Techniques for Managerial Decisions
The foundation course aims to provide basic skills in using statistical and quantitative techniques in analyzing and solving business problems. The course will also enhance student's capabilities in using the tools in planning and conducting research work.

 

Financial Accounting
This core area course aims to inculcate the basic understanding of financial accounting principles with a view to develop student's skill in analyzing and preparing financial statements.

 

Managerial Economics
This core area course aims to develop students skill in using the microeconomic concepts and tools to analyze and solve business problems.

 

Marketing Management
This core area course aims to equip students with strategic skills and competencies to analyze market opportunities, formulate marketing strategies and implement marketing program.

 

Research Methodology
The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with various statistical methods and tools & research methodology required to conduct research work and prepare research reports for managerial decision making.

 

Management Accounting
The objective of this course is to provide the students with an understanding of the concept of Management Accounting together with application of various management accounting tools & techniques in planning, controlling & decision making.

 

Economic Analysis and Environment
This course deals with different economic concepts, theories & their application in analyzing consumers & firms behaviour, economic environment of business and role of economic policies in general.

 

Financial Management
The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with the basic concepts of financial management & provide necessary skills to understand financial business environment & operation and emphasizing their application in solving the problems relating to managerial finance in an enterprise to the real world through some financial decisions.

 

Human Resources Management
The learning objective of this course is to sensitize students to the various facets of managing people and to create an understanding of the various policies and practices to human resources management.

 

Organizational Behaviour
To familiarize students with individual and & group behaviour dynamics in the context of different organizations and social systems. Entrepreneurship Development The objective of this course is to acquaint the concepts of entrepreneurship and to impart knowledge to establish/operate and enterprise.

 

Entrepreneurship Development
The objective of this course is to acquaint the concepts of entrepreneurship and to impart knowledge to establish/operate and enterprise.

 

Management Information Systems
This course provides the basic background necessary to make decisions about computer based information system.

 

Production and Operations Management
The objective of this course is to develop an integrative framework of management and operations by addressing the actual issues confronted by operating managers within the management framework of planning, organizing and controlling.

 

Strategic Management

The capstone course aims to develop student's skill in using the tools & techniques of strategic management to analyze business environment and formulate and implement business strategies in the dynamic and competitive environment.

 

International Business

The course intends to inject the norms and critical issues among the students regarding the macro management of international business environment in the present highly competitive world.

 

Graduation Requirements

Students must complete all the requirements of the program within the maximum period of credit accumulation allowed for the program. Students failing to do so must withdraw from the program. The students of the MBA program must fulfill the following requirements for graduation:

a.

The successful completion of 69 credit hours with a minimum passing grade of "C" in all papers, internship and project work/thesis.

b.

The successful completion of the program within the maximum period of credit accumulation with an aggregate grade of "C" or CGPA of 2.0.

 

Failing in a Course and Make-up Examination
If a student fails to receive a passing grade in a course the student shall be allowed to appear in the make-up examination in the subsequent semester-end examination.


A student shall be allowed to take only two -make-up examinations in a particular course. If a student fails to obtain a passing grade after the two make-up examinations then he/she shall have to re-register to the course as per the course cycle. A student will be allowed to take make-up examination in only two courses (equivalent to 6 credit hours) in addition to the regular credit weight prescribed for the semester. However, after the normal duration of the program a student may take make-up examination in the six courses (equivalent to 18 credit hours) in a semester.

 

Failing to Receive the Minimum Average Grade
If a student fails to receive the minimum average grade of "C" or CGPA of 2.0 at the end of the program, he / she shall be allowed to take make-up examination through which he/she gets the chance to improve his/her grade and achieve the minimum required grade. For this purpose a student will be allowed to take make-up examination in not more than four courses. A student will not be allowed to take such make-up examination not more than two times in a particular course. This provision will not be applicable for thesis and internship.

 

Internship Project

Students at the end of the Third Semester shall be assigned to organizations for practical exposure and business orientation. The period of internship shall be of eight weeks. At the end of the internship, the students shall prepare a report on the prescribed format and present in a seminar organized by the school. The evaluation of the internship shall be made by the school over the following two components:

a.

Confidential report of the host organization: 50 percent

b.

Presentation of internship report (written and seminar presentation): 50 percent

A student must secure a passing grade of "C" in the internship program.

 

Thesis
Students must undertake a research assignment and prepare a research report at the end of the fourth semester. Students have the option to undertake a project work based on the applied research methodology or prepares a thesis based on the pure research methodology. The school will assign a faculty member to supervise the thesis. The research work must be presented in the format as prescribed by Faculty of Management. The evaluation of the thesis shall be based in the following two components:

 

Written Report: 50 percent
Viva-voce: 50 percent

 

The evaluation of the written as well as the viva-voce examination must be conducted by external experts as per the roster approved by the Faculty of Management, PU.
