Course Description:

BA in Journalism and Mass Communication enable students to appreciate and discuss the importance of studying journalism and mass communication in relation to mass media. They will be able to apply mass communication principles and have insight into communication issues through application in the practical fields.

Students gain insight into the history, laws and ethical issues of media functioning, including management and organization understanding of news operation and editing and identify major trends in national and global media, raise issues with information flow system and define systems that govern the role and operation of journalism activity.

Career

Career in journalism and mass communication is a prestigious profession as well as a highly paid one. Journalist plays a major role in the development of a nation. It is through them that we get information about daily happenings in the society. The purpose of journalism itself is to inform and interpret, educate and enlighten the people. The opportunities for journalists are endless and at the same time the job has become more challenging, as the new world is proving the adage that “the pen (and the camera) is mightier than the sword.” Simple reporting of events is no more sufficient, more specialization and professionalism in reporting is required. They can find employment with newspapers, periodicals and magazines, government information service, press information bureau, websites, Radio channels and TV channels.

Prerequisites
Students are required to have completed their Intermediate or equivalent qualifications in any discipline with Journalism (100 marks). Students who opt for major English and Journalism should have studied these subjects at their intermediate level.

Program Outline
The Bachelor of Arts-Journalism and Mass Communication requires three year, desired set of 14 credit subjects (1400 marks), of college level study. It is a dual concept; hence the students get specialization on two majors (J&MC and English/S&A/RD/SW). Standard length of the program is 3 years, which requires full time students to take 4 credit subjects on first year, 5 credit subjects on second year and 5 credit subjects with 1 non credit subject on third year. Paper VI of each major is a functional paper. Paper VI of a second major will be a non credit for TU but will be awarded by RIA separately. The students of journalism have practical evaluated for 30 marks and theory for 70 marks in each major paper except functional paper, which comprises practical of 20 marks and theory of 80 marks.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The candidate applying for admission to the BA program must have successfully completed PCL or HSEB 10+2 in business/commerce/science or any equivalent course form any board or university.

The Paper V has three options introduced in the third year with specific objectives:
> Photo Journalism and Advance Journalism aims to provide knowledge and understanding of photo journalism and to demonstrate the application of principle of photography, photo journalism, visual reporting and editing; and advance techniques of news reporting, editing and opinion writing.
> Radio Journalism aims to impart principles and practices of television journalism, television programme production skills and their application through internship or practical work.
> Television Journalism aims to impart principles and practices of television journalism, television programme production skills and their application through internship or practical work.

Functional Paper, Media, Journalism and Mass Communication deals with basic concepts, theory, principles and practices of journalism and mass communication, historical development of mass media and media issues in the society.
