Nursing is a discipline focused on assisting individuals, families and communities in attaining, re-attaining and maintaining optimal health and functioning. Modern definitions of nursing define it as a science and an art that focuses on quality of life as defined by persons and families. Nursing is not only concerned about health and functioning but with quality of living and dying, lived experience, and universal lived experiences of health. Nursing is an applied science which has a unique body of knowledge that utilizes principles from the physical, biological, and behavioral sciences. The focus of nursing is health promotion, maintenance, curative, restorative, supportive and terminal care to individuals and groups of all ages, taking into consideration the factors that influence them in the total environment.

After passing the SLC examination, nursing comes as one of the most attractive subject for studies among the girls. For many girls, nursing is the first choice and they want to shape their career in technical field. Since last few years, nursing has become one of the most popular professions. However, the profession was not held in high regards in Nepali society till a few years ago. But now, not only the students but even the parents are quite keen to make their daughters nurses. The increasing demand of nurses in the health sector all over the world has also promoted the nursing profession. Not only in Nepal, they have good and alluring job opportunities abroad as well. This is the reason many Nepali nurses have now reached Europe, America, Germany, Australia and other countries. Especially Britain has become a very prospective destination for nurses. In terms of the service they offer, Nepali nurses are no way behind foreigners. The fact that Nepali nurses have a wide acceptance abroad speaks for this fact. It has become a globally recognized profession and its demand is increasing day by day.

In Nepal , nursing education can be done from different Universities like Tribhuwan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Science, Purvanchal University and Center for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT). National Academy of Medical Sciences also has nursing courses.
